  • Deadman's Pond
A small, historic pond believed to be bottomless and located on Signal Hill in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada is also the final resting place for executed criminals after they were removed from the Gibbet Hill. Captured pirates and other convicted criminals were hung from a gallows on top of the hill, and the bodies were then suspended as a warning to everyone in the city and those entering by ship. It is widely believed that is how Deadman's Pond got its name. It could also have gotten its unfortunate handle as a result of the numerous drownings that have occurred there.
