Windy Ridge by Anne Marie Whittaker

    27/05/2026 | 46 mins.
“I rounded the hillock. It did not conceal a tumbledown wall. Instead, to my utter amazement, I beheld a neat littlebungalow standing behind a trim lawn. It was sheltered below a high ridge in the land behind, and between the two acrescent of tall poplars embraced it to offer further protection from the elements. I was astonished – I could hardly havebeen more so if the little house been made out of gingerbread and Hansel and Gretel had been playing on the lawn. There was a low drystone wall around the garden, and a wooden gate set into it bore the name “Cefn Gwyntog”. Well-tended flower beds bordered the path leading to the front door, which was flanked by pots of pelargoniums. Tomatoeswere ripening in a small greenhouse and snowy white vests and bloomers hung from a washing line, but weremotionless - there was still no wind, and I could no longer hear the birds…”

Hello and welcome, dear listeners, to Haunted UK Fiction – a sister podcast to The Haunted UK which features original flash fiction, short stories, and novellas with paranormal themes. All stories you will hear were written by a collection of talented writers, authors, and storytellers, both independent and professional. In today’s episode we’ll be reading Windy Ridge which was sent in to us by Anne Marie Whittaker. Anne Marie Whittaker is originally from Lancashire but has lived in South Wales for many years. She’s always enjoyed reading and writing, as well as art and crafts – and was a graphic designer back in the day. Retired now, she loves the freedom it gives her to do the creative things she actually wants to do!  Her inspiration for Windy Ridge came from a house she saw while out walking a couple of years ago. It fascinated her because its garden was cared for but the curtains at the windows were, quite literally, rags. She later learned the very sad, human story behind the condition of the house, which wasn’t related to us so as not to upset anyone who might recognize it. She was out on a walk not long after having had a knee replacement; she hadn’t been able to walk much for some time, which prodded her into writing more, and into doing more art and craft, like the narrator in the story. Like the character, she began to listen to podcasts about the ghostly and the paranormal while occupied thus at the kitchen table. She loved both real life accounts and fiction, and began to notice the structure in stories, what she found powerful in them, and tried to use this in Windy Ridge.

Anne Marie’s influences are, in her own words, Anything and anything! She has always read a lot, and feels MR James is a master of the genre - Casting the Runes being her favourite. In recent years she has discovered Robert Aikman, whose stories are not strictly ghost stories but are seriously disturbing. Since she began listening to ghost story podcasts, her favourite short story has been The Crown Derby Plate by Marjorie Bowen. It is beautifully written and there is some levity in it which sets off the ghostly side of things very well.

We truly hope you this time slip tale by Anne Marie Whittaker. Keep an eye in upcoming seasons as we have more of Anne Marie’s work to share with you.

Flash Fiction - The Last Ghost Hunters by Liah Thorley | The hunters being hunted

    22/05/2026 | 9 mins.
Not all ghost hunts are what they seem...

“My companions listen to our guide as she fills us with tantalising fear. Stories of murder and suicide, bodies dismembered or swinging from ropes drip from her scarlet lips with gregarious enthusiasm. She is captivating and vivacious in a dirty kind of way. She flicks her dusty blond hair over her shoulder, and her blue eyes dart a glance towards me. For a split second, she hesitates. Her lips curl slightly and then part as she begins her next story.…”

What begins as an evening of entertainment, tales of hauntings, murder, and restless spirits, slowly takes on a different tone as something beneath the performance begins to surface. Some stories are told for effect, others serve a very different purpose. This original paranormal horror story explores perception, performance, and the unsettling feeling that you may not be the one doing the observing.

The Mosses Part 2 by LD Brown | The conclusion of this strange adventure

    20/05/2026 | 33 mins.
The conclusion of this eerie, atmospheric story...

“She lowered her voice, almost to a whisper and glanced to and fro as if cautious of her surroundings. “I think, perhaps, that you might not be able to endure the experience.” Initially, I thought that this little put down of hers was typical of her character; it was both something of a good-natured tease and a defensive stance against what she regarded as my rigid scepticism. It is only now, as I relate these events so many years later, that there was no veiled meaning in those words of hers.  It was simply a warning…”

What began as curiosity now gives way to consequence, as the true nature of The Mosses reveals itself: Slow, inescapable, and far older than those who wander into it. This original paranormal folk horror story explores consequence, inevitability, and the quiet terror of realizing the warning was real.

If you enjoy this story, continue your listening with:
The Mosses – Part 1 (return to where the journey began)
The Overcoat (another atmospheric tale by the same author, steeped in creeping unease)
Blackdamp (a suffocating story where the environment itself becomes inescapable)

The Mosses Part 1 by LD Brown | A strange story of experimentation

    13/05/2026 | 33 mins.
Beneath the still waters of The Mosses, something ancient waits... This is part 1 of a 2-part episode.

“These marshes and bogs beheld a great abundance of streams which criss-crossed the rough grass in huge spider-web formations. These streams grew, split, thickened and slowed so very gradually until, at the very heart of the marsh, all gentle trickling ceased and great pools of brown water stood silent and deep. I had been informed that these areas were known as “The Mosses,” and it would be most unwise to leave the path and explore them…”

Deep within the wetlands known as The Mosses, the land itself begins to change, something ancient seems to watch from beneath the still, dark water. Not all danger announces itself, some ancient forms of it simply wait. This original paranormal folk horror story explores isolation, landscape, and the quiet terror of stepping somewhere you were never meant to go.

If you enjoy this story, continue your listening with:
The Mosses – Part 2 (continue the story as the true horror of the marsh begins to reveal itself)
The Overcoat (another unsettling tale by the same author, steeped in atmosphere and creeping dread)
Blackdamp (a claustrophobic story where the environment itself becomes deadly)

Folded In by Willerby | A twisted tale of mystery and danger

    06/05/2026 | 28 mins.
A house that doesn’t behave. A space that won’t stay still. What if reality has rules… and this Willerby house breaks them?

"Mauve went round the house with Caitlin pulling down every blind, closing every curtain and turning off every light. “Where we’re going don’t fit with the shape of this world we’re used to,” she said, “and seeing things in it will mislead us. What looks, I don’t know, like a chair two feet way don’t mean in the places we are trying to get to there’s a chair two feet away. It could be a mile away. It might not be a chair…”

What begins as a strange set of instructions quickly becomes something far more disorienting, as familiar space begins to twist, stretch, and collapse into something unknowable.Distances shift. Objects deceive. And once you step inside, the world you understand may no longer apply. This original paranormal horror story explores altered dimensions, perception, and the terrifying idea of slipping into a place that doesn’t follow the rules of reality.

If you enjoy this story, continue your listening with:\
Shortcuts (another unsettling tale from Willerby, where a simple path leads somewhere it shouldn’t)
Spores (a deeply unsettling story where something begins to spread beyond control)
The Thing in the Wall (a nightmare where reality begins to break and something crosses through)

    About the Story
Folded In comes from the mysterious town of Willerby — a place that seems to exist slightly out of step with the rest of the world. These stories were discovered during the early planning stages of Haunted UK Fiction, on a website documenting the town and its inhabitants. The identity of those behind it remains unknown, but permission was granted to share these accounts under a number of unusual conditions.
