Faith, Leadership, and the Unavoidable Thread of Politics in Our Lives
In this week's episode, I take the mic solo to reflect on the passing of Pope Francis and what his legacy means for faith, culture, and the ever-present world of politics. Raised in a deeply Catholic family, my experience as both a political commentator and a lifelong Catholic gives me a unique lens on how Church leadership ripples into our communities and institutions. My journey through religion, personal loss, and public service shapes how I look at the Catholic Church’s pivotal moments—and what comes next. I share candid and personal thoughts on the influence of Pope Francis, from his humble roots as the first Latin American Pope to the bold, sometimes controversial stances he took on climate change, LGBTQ inclusion, and the evolving role of women in the Church. I question how politics weaves its way into religion—and vice versa—and explore what it means when Church leaders step into the political spotlight. I don’t hold back about my critiques, including my call for married and female priests, and my opinion on separating personal choice from public policy. I also take you inside the secretive papal conclave, share my vision for a younger, more progressive Pope, and reflect on a moving personal encounter with Pope Francis in Rome. “Politics is in every bit of life. There’s politics in your offices, there’s politics in your friend groups, there’s politics in your tennis team, there’s politics in your playgroup.” ~Jennifer Nassour This week on Political Contessa: My reflections on Pope Francis’ legacy and his passing Pope Francis’ historic firsts and progressive actions The impact of Church's stances on major social and political issues Why I believe we should welcome married and female priests My critiques of conservatism and calls for reforming the Church The secretive process behind the papal conclave The essential role of women in transmitting faith and values Why there's politics in every layer of life Awaken Your Inner Political Contessa Thanks for tuning into this week’s episode of Political Contessa. Analyzing the Immigration Debate with Massachusetts' Senator Ryan Fattman
In this week's episode of Political Contessa, Jennifer welcomes Senator Ryan Fattman, a prominent figure in Massachusetts politics who has served as a state senator for the 8th Worcester District since 2015. Ryan’s political journey began as a youthful state representative for the 18th Worcester District, elected during Jennifer's tenure as party chair, marking a shared history of dedication and political growth alongside her. Jennifer and Ryan delve into the complex and controversial topic of immigration in Massachusetts, highlighting the significant impacts of sanctuary policies on public safety, the financial burden, and public health. The episode rigorously examines the challenges posed by illegal immigration, the strain on local communities' resources, and the ineffectiveness in policymaking and vetting processes under current state administration. Ryan shares insight into unsustainable policies and decisions that have compounded issues for Massachusetts taxpayers and emphasizes the need for policy reforms. “Our institutions and our policy deliveries are so weakened that anyone can come here and get whatever they want.” ~Ryan Fattman Today on Political Contessa: Massachusetts is considered a sanctuary state with policies impacting state resources and safety. The financial burden on Massachusetts due to illegal immigration is escalating unsustainably. Public safety incidents, including violent crimes, are frequent in unauthorized migrant shelters. The state does not adequately notify local authorities before placing migrant populations in communities. Massachusetts taxpayers are covering billions in costs related to housing and benefits for illegal immigrants. The current administration’s policies lack proper vetting, endangering community welfare. State policies offer illegal immigrants benefits similar to those of Massachusetts residents. Efforts are being made to address the shortcomings in state-level immigration policy. Honoring Mia Love: A Role Model for Women
In this week's episode, Jennifer presents an engaging tribute to Mia Love, highlighting the life and legacy of the first black Republican congresswoman who represented Utah's 4th congressional district in the House from 2015 until 2019. Born in New York to Haitian immigrants, Mia Love broke new ground with her remarkable political journey in a predominantly white, conservative district. In addition to being a congresswoman, she was a mother and former flight attendant who made her mark in politics by championing public safety and fiscal responsibility. Sadly, Mia passed away at the age of 49 due to a brain tumor, leaving behind a legacy that inspires young women and political enthusiasts alike. Jennifer reflects on Mia Love's considerable impact on the political sphere, navigating complex themes such as the lack of diversity within political parties and the critical need for inclusive perspectives in governance. The discussion covers Mia's significant career achievements, her choice not to endorse Trump, and how that decision influenced her political trajectory. Jennifer delves into broader political issues, reflecting on the current state of political discourse and the pressing need for respectful, integrity-driven leadership. The episode serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of diverse voices in politics and highlights ongoing challenges like immigration and the underrepresentation of women. "Mia Love, thank you for being an inspiration to young women like your daughter, young women like my daughters, and to someone around the same age as you who really thought that you were a phenomenal role model." ~Jennifer Nassour Today on Political Contessa: Mia Love was a pioneering figure as the first black Republican congresswoman. Her political journey was motivated by public safety and fiscal responsibility. Mia did not endorse Trump during the 2016 election. She tragically passed away from a brain tumor at the age of 49. There is a call for more diverse perspectives within the Republican Party. The current political discourse often lacks respect and integrity. The Democratic Party faces challenges with internal disunity. Women's representation in politics remains insufficient across many areas. Women on the right need a safe space to discuss politics, policy, news, and ownership over the fact that it is ok to agree to disagree. It is our First Amendment right to free speech. Before we can even out the number of women in our local, state, & federal governments, we need to empower women to feel comfortable and confident discussing these and other topics.
My name is Jennifer. I’m a single mom of three girls living in Boston. I’m a lawyer with two political science degrees, and I have no problem talking politics with people who disagree with me.
I spent three years as the Chairman of the Massachusetts GOP and ran for the very liberal Boston City Council. I’m a frequent analyst on Newsmax, Fox News Radio, and Boston Media. As a Republican in a blue state, I know a few things about how to disagree agreeably.
