  • Martin Dobson Special: Everton in the 70s with English football’s first £300,000 player | Goodison Park: My Home
Martin Dobson, English football’s first £300,000 player, joins Chris Beesley as the latest guest on Goodison Park: My Home to relive Everton matters from the 1970s.  The 77-year-old, who has penned his own autobiography Dobo: For Club and Country, tells the story of how he went from being released by Bolton Wanderers as a teenager to an England international with Burnley and his record-breaking transfer to the Blues in 1974. The classy midfielder has a treasure trove of tails from an era when Everton had several near-misses: in the title race in Dobson’s first season, in an epic three-game League Cup final against Aston Villa and a notorious FA Cup semi-final against Liverpool when they were denied a Wembley trip by referee Clive Thomas’ controversial decision.  There are also plenty of more-enjoyable moments though as Dobo recalls captaining the Blues to victory in the ‘Andy King’ Merseyside Derby, the 6-0 romp against Chelsea when Bob Latchford reached 30 goals for the season and another Goodison game against the west London side when his pal Duncan McKenzie scored for the opposition only for the home crowd to applaud. • Everton edge closer to safety but Moyes left disappointed with Wolves point!
Join Ian Croll, Joe Thomas & Tony Scott for the Monday edition of the Royal Blue podcast as they discuss Everton’s 1-1 with Wolves. Everton extended their unbeaten run in the Premier League to eight matches under David Moyes tonight. They played out a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux. Despite the two sides only being separated by one place in the table going into the contest, the result maintained the 10-point gap between the pair. It also saw the Blues go above Manchester United and West Ham United on goal difference in 14th. Jack Harrison fired Everton ahead on 33 minutes with his first goal of the season as his shot was deflected in off Matt Doherty but Marshall Munetsi restored parity for 17th-placed Wolves seven minutes later after Jarrad Branthwaite was unable to clear a ball into the box. • Joe Royle Special: Exclusive With Everton Legend | Goodison Park: My Home
Joe Royle – the only living person to achieve legendary status at Everton as both a player and manager (the other being the late, great Howard Kendall) – invites Chris Beesley to his house for a special episode of Goodison Park: My Home. Royle, who grew up in Norris Green, attending Ranworth Square Primary School before going on to Quarry Bank High School where he developed into a talented all-round sportsman, also excelling in the high jump and swimming, became Everton’s youngest-ever player at the time when he was controversially picked ahead of ‘The Golden Vision’ Alex Young by Harry Catterick to make his debut at Blackpool aged 16 years and 282 days on January 15, 1966, a record that stood for over 42 years until it was eclipsed by Jose Baxter. Although Royle was part of the Blues team that lost 1-0 after extra time to West Bromwich Albion in the 1968 FA Cup final, alongside the ‘Holy Trinity’ midfield of Kendall, Colin Harvey and Alan Ball, plus the likes of captain Brian Labone, goalkeeper Gordon West, fellow Scouser Tommy Wright and his good friend John Hurst, he was top scorer in Everton’s 1969/70 League Championship-winning side. Once reaching 29 goals in all competitions in 1968/69, by the time Royle’s Everton career had finished, he had netted more times for the club (119) than any player since Dixie Dean. Returning to Goodison Park as manager in November 1994 with the team bottom of the Premier League, he saved the Blues from relegation while also becoming the only manager in Everton history to win a trophy in his first season in charge. Some 30 years on, Royle remains the last Everton manager to secure major silverware for the club, while the following campaign (1995/96), he steered them to sixth place, which was their only top-half finish in the first decade of the Premier League. Now 75, he explains how the circumstances behind his departure continue to perplex him but as a True Blue, he was delighted to return to the Goodison hot seat for one last time as caretaker boss alongside his former player David Unsworth against Norwich City in 2016.
