A botched FBI stakeout leaves an entire cult dead — including an agent killed in a locked car, with no possible way the weapon could’ve been used.
With Scully absent, Doggett and Skinner hunt for the missing cult leader, a man who believed enlightenment could be reached through darkness and powerful hallucinogens.
But as more bodies turn up, the case takes a terrifying turn — victims appear to be dying inside their own nightmares… and Doggett starts having those same dreams.
As reality begins to blur, Doggett is forced to confront the possibility that the killer doesn’t need to be there to strike — because once he’s in your mind… you’re already dead.

Agent Doggett investigates the case from a straightforward, procedural angle, unaware that Wells is reliving events in reverse and trying to prevent a murder that, from his perspective, has already happened.
As the timeline rewinds further, the truth emerges: Wells is being framed, and the real killer is someone much closer than anyone suspects.

Welcome back to the show! Today we’re diving into one of the most unsettling, skin-crawling hours of The X-Files ever aired — Season 8, Episode 4: “Roadrunners.”
This is the one where Scully ignores every horror-movie rule, goes on a solo road trip into a desert nightmare town, and ends up face-to-face with a slug that’s apparently auditioning for the role of “Jesus, but slimier.” Meanwhile, Doggett finally gets to level up from “new guy” to “action hero” as he launches a rescue mission Mulder would’ve absolutely handled with… significantly more yelling.
It’s creepy. It’s cult-y. It’s claustrophobic. And it’s the episode where the Scully/Doggett partnership truly starts to click — mostly because she gets kidnapped by a parasitic church group and he has to save her. You know… bonding.
