The Rufus Stone: The Mysterious Death of King William II - New Forest History & Folklore
13/07/2026 | 14 mins.King William II, better known as William Rufus, rode into the New Forest on a summer hunting trip in the year 1100. By the end of the day he was dead, struck by an arrow under circumstances that remain one of England's greatest unsolved historical mysteries.
Was it a tragic hunting accident? An assassination disguised as misfortune? Or was his death linked to the curse that many medieval people believed hung over the New Forest?
In this episode of Ghost Tales by the Fireside, we explore the history behind the Rufus Stone near Minstead, the death of the Red King, the rumours that followed, and the ghostly folklore that still surrounds this quiet corner of Hampshire nearly a thousand years later.
From Norman kings and royal hunting forests to phantom riders, spectral legends and one of England's most enduring mysteries, join me as we step back into the shadows of medieval England.

The New Forest is filled with ancient stories, but few are as mysterious as the death of King William Rufus. Discover the history, folklore and ghost stories surrounding the Rufus Stone and one of England's greatest unsolved medieval mysteries. The Ghosts of Pendle Hill - Witches, Lancaster Castle & England's Most Haunted Landscape
09/07/2026 | 19 mins. For more than four hundred years, the shadow of Pendle Hill has loomed over one of the most infamous episodes in British history.
In 1612, a series of accusations led to the trial and execution of ten people accused of witchcraft. Their names became forever linked with Pendle, Lancaster Castle and the surrounding Lancashire countryside. Yet while the history is well documented, the stories did not end at the gallows.
In this episode of Ghost Tales by the Fireside, we explore the haunted legacy of the Pendle Witches, from the eerie churchyard of Newchurch and the mystery of the lost Malkin Tower, to reports of a ghostly woman wandering the slopes of Pendle Hill. We also journey inside Lancaster Castle, where visitors continue to report apparitions, strange voices, unexplained cold spots and encounters with figures said to walk the ancient prison cells.
Are these simply legends that have grown around a tragic chapter of history, or has Pendle become one of Britain's truly haunted landscapes?
Sit back, relax, and join me by the fireside as we explore the ghosts, folklore and history of Pendle Hill.

06/07/2026 | 9 mins.Hidden among the limestone cliffs of Beetham Fell lies one of Cumbria's most unusual folklore sites.
The Fairy Steps are best known for an old legend claiming that anyone who can climb the narrow staircase without touching the rock walls will be granted a wish by the fairies. But beneath the famous tale lies a much darker history.
For centuries, the Fairy Steps formed part of an ancient corpse road used to carry the dead from Arnside to St Michael and All Angels Church in Beetham. Funeral processions crossed the fell, navigating the narrow limestone passage with the aid of ropes and iron rings set into the rock.
The area is also linked to the legend of the Cappel, a terrifying black dog said to haunt the lanes around Beetham. With blazing eyes and a reputation as an omen of death, the creature became one of Cumbria's most chilling pieces of folklore.
Join me as we explore the history, folklore and ghostly traditions surrounding one of the Lake District's most fascinating hidden landmarks.

Among The Graves https://open.spotify.com/track/1MpkLPbmKqjHtQcUotH70A- Borley Rectory has been called England's most haunted house for nearly a century.
Stories of a ghostly nun, phantom footsteps, mysterious messages appearing on walls, ringing bells, poltergeist activity and unexplained apparitions transformed a quiet Essex rectory into the most famous paranormal case in British history.
But how much of the story was real?
In this extended episode of Ghost Tales by the Fireside, we explore the complete history of Borley Rectory, from its construction in the 1860s and the experiences reported by the Bull family, through the investigations of renowned paranormal researcher Harry Price, to the later controversies that challenged many of the claims.
Drawing on contemporary accounts, witness statements, newspaper reports, psychical research records and modern historical investigations, this episode examines both the haunting and the investigation itself.
Was Borley Rectory genuinely haunted?
Or did England's greatest ghost story grow through folklore, media attention and decades of retelling?
This episode was a challenge to record. I've been suffering badly with hayfever while putting it together, so please forgive any rough edges that might have slipped through. While recording, something unusual also happened. After stopping for a short break, I returned and continued recording several sections before discovering that my microphone had somehow been switched off and disconnected. I was the only person in the room.
Even stranger, while recording one section of the episode, a faint giggling sound was captured on the microphone. I've left the recording in the episode exactly as it was captured so you can decide for yourself what you're hearing.
Join me beside the fireside as we uncover one of the most debated mysteries in paranormal history.

29/06/2026 | 17 mins.Just off the coast of Deal in Kent lies one of the most dangerous stretches of water in Britain. The Goodwin Sands have claimed thousands of ships over the centuries, creating a vast maritime graveyard beneath the English Channel.
In this episode of Ghost Tales by the Fireside, we explore the history of the Goodwin Sands, from devastating shipwrecks and the Great Storm of 1703 to the enduring legend of the Lady Lovibond, Britain's most famous ghost ship.
According to folklore, the doomed vessel returns every fifty years to repeat its final voyage across the sands, though historians have never found evidence proving the ship ever existed.
Was the Lady Lovibond a real ship lost to the sea, or a legend that grew from centuries of tragedy on the Goodwin Sands? Join me as we separate history from folklore and uncover one of Britain's greatest maritime mysteries.
