Show Notes – "De Profundis"
"De Profundis" is one of Arthur Conan Doyle's most haunting non‑Holmes stories — a tale of empire, distance, danger, and the strange ways the human mind reaches across oceans in moments of crisis.
What "De Profundis" Means
The title comes from the Latin phrase "De profundis clamavi" — "Out of the depths I cry." It appears in Psalm 130, a plea spoken from deep suffering, often used in literature to evoke grief, longing, or the thin veil between life and death. Doyle's choice of title sets the tone: this is a story about a cry rising from the depths — literally and emotionally.
What Inspired Doyle to Write It
Doyle spent years fascinated by the sea, the British Empire's far‑flung frontiers, and the uncanny experiences reported by soldiers, sailors, and families separated by great distances. He was deeply interested in:
Telepathy and psychic phenomena
Premonitions and "death visions"
Stories of loved ones appearing at the moment of death
These accounts were widely discussed in the late 19th century, and Doyle — who later became a passionate investigator of spiritual phenomena — often explored them in fiction. "De Profundis" blends that interest with his love of maritime adventure and his understanding of the emotional cost of empire: young men dying far from home, and families left with only intuition and dread.
The story's unforgettable central moment — a man appearing on the moonlit sea at the instant of his death — reflects Doyle's fascination with the boundary between the natural and the supernatural. And in classic Doyle fashion, he leaves the reader with two possible explanations: a psychic vision… or a chillingly physical one.
About the Story
"De Profundis" follows John Vansittart, a young coffee exporter returning to Ceylon with his new bride. Illness strikes him just as their ship departs, and a violent storm separates husband and wife. What follows is a tale of fear, waiting, and a moonlit encounter on a calm sea that neither science nor superstition can fully explain.
It is one of Doyle's most atmospheric stories — a blend of maritime adventure, psychological tension, and the eerie sense that the ocean sometimes carries messages no landbound mind can understand.

Show Notes
A priceless jewel. A battered Christmas goose. And a mystery that begins not with a crime scene, but with a hat left lying in the street. In one of the most beloved holiday tales in the Sherlock Holmes canon, Holmes and Watson find themselves unraveling a case that begins in comedy and ends in compassion.
When a rough‑and‑tumble scuffle on a London street leaves a man's hat and goose abandoned on the pavement, Holmes senses something unusual. A closer look reveals a hidden treasure: the famed Blue Carbuncle, stolen only days earlier in a sensational burglary that has Scotland Yard baffled. With nothing more than a few clues — a worn hat, a lost bird, and Holmes's uncanny powers of deduction — the pair trace the jewel's strange journey across London, uncovering a chain of events that leads to a surprising and very human conclusion.
This episode showcases Holmes at his most observant, most playful, and most merciful, reminding listeners why The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle remains a seasonal favorite more than a century after its publication.

Show Notes – Stories of Sherlock Holmes: "The Tragedy at Torridge Lodge" & "The Unpaid Debt"
THE TRAGEDY AT TORRIDGE LODGE
Holmes and Watson are summoned to the quiet countryside to investigate a sudden and deeply troubling death at Torridge Lodge — a sprawling estate where wealth and respectability hide a simmering undercurrent of fear. The victim's demise appears accidental, even unfortunate, but Holmes immediately senses that the details don't line up. The timing is wrong, the witnesses are evasive, and the physical evidence suggests a hand far more deliberate than fate.
As Holmes examines the grounds, interviews the household, and studies the subtle inconsistencies in their stories, he uncovers a web of jealousy, desperation, and long‑buried resentment. Torridge Lodge is a place where appearances matter more than truth, and someone has gone to great lengths to keep their secrets intact. Holmes's reconstruction of the crime — precise, elegant, and devastating — reveals the tragic chain of events that led to murder. "The Tragedy at Torridge Lodge" is a classic Holmes tale of quiet evil in a respectable home, reminding listeners that danger often hides behind the most polished doors.
THE UNPAID DEBT
A seemingly minor financial dispute becomes the doorway to a much darker mystery when Holmes is asked to look into a man who has been aggressively pursuing an old debt. At first glance, it appears to be nothing more than a stubborn creditor refusing to let go of a past obligation. But Holmes quickly realizes that the debtor's fear is out of proportion to the amount owed — and that the creditor's persistence masks a motive far more sinister than money.
Holmes and Watson follow the trail through London's backstreets, uncovering a history of threats, manipulation, and a secret that someone is willing to kill to protect. The "unpaid debt" turns out to be symbolic — a past crime, a broken promise, and a reckoning long overdue. Holmes's ability to read human nature proves crucial as he exposes the truth behind the relentless pursuit and reveals the real reason the debt was never meant to be settled. "The Unpaid Debt" is a sharp, character‑driven mystery that shows Holmes at his psychological best, unraveling a crime rooted in guilt, revenge, and the dangerous weight of unfinished business.

Show Notes – Stories of Sherlock Holmes: "The Crouch End Mystery" & "The Tragedy at Nettlebed"
THE CROUCH END MYSTERY
Sherlock Holmes is drawn into one of his most unsettling suburban cases when a frightened client arrives at Baker Street with a story that seems impossible on its face. A quiet neighborhood in Crouch End has been shaken by a strange disappearance — a man who stepped out of his home and simply never returned. The clues are few, the witnesses nervous, and the circumstances bizarre enough to challenge even Holmes's razor‑sharp logic.
Holmes and Watson travel to Crouch End, where they encounter a tangle of half‑truths, suspicious behavior, and a household hiding more than it admits. Holmes studies the layout of the neighborhood, the timing of the disappearance, and the peculiar inconsistencies in the victim's last known movements. As the investigation deepens, Holmes uncovers a scheme built on fear, deception, and a carefully engineered vanishing act. "The Crouch End Mystery" is a gripping, atmospheric case that showcases Holmes's ability to see through confusion and uncover the simple truth hidden beneath layers of misdirection.
THE TRAGEDY AT NETTLEBED
A quiet country village becomes the setting for a chilling mystery when Holmes and Watson are summoned to investigate a sudden and tragic death at Nettlebed. The victim's passing appears natural at first glance, but Holmes immediately senses that something is wrong — the details are too neat, the witnesses too rehearsed, and the circumstances too convenient.
As Holmes interviews the villagers and examines the scene, he uncovers a web of jealousy, opportunity, and long‑buried resentment. The tragedy at Nettlebed is not the result of chance but of careful planning, and Holmes must untangle the motives of those closest to the victim to reveal the truth. With Watson at his side, Holmes pieces together the clues — a misplaced object, an overheard remark, a contradiction in testimony — until the entire plot stands exposed. "The Tragedy at Nettlebed" is a classic Holmes tale of quiet evil in a peaceful setting, reminding listeners that even the most tranquil English village can hide a deadly secret.

Show Notes – Stories of Sherlock Holmes: "The Neen River Mystery" & "The Porter Mews Mystery"
THE NEEN RIVER MYSTERY
In this atmospheric radio adventure, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are drawn into a case that begins far from Baker Street — on the lonely banks of the Neen River. A man has vanished under circumstances that defy simple explanation, and the clues left behind are as murky as the river itself. When Holmes is asked to investigate, he quickly senses that something far more sinister is at work.
Holmes and Watson travel into the countryside, where they encounter frightened locals, conflicting accounts, and a landscape that seems to hide secrets in every shadow. Holmes studies the river, the footprints, the timing, and the strange behavior of those closest to the missing man. As the pieces fall into place, he uncovers a plot built on greed, deception, and a carefully engineered disappearance. "The Neen River Mystery" is classic radio Holmes — rich atmosphere, sharp deduction, and a final reveal that reminds listeners why no one sees through a fog of lies quite like Sherlock Holmes.
THE PORTER MEWS MYSTERY
This case begins in the cramped, twisting alleys of Porter Mews, where a seemingly minor disturbance draws Holmes and Watson into a mystery that grows more complex with every turn. A resident of the Mews has been attacked, and the circumstances surrounding the assault make little sense. The victim's story is inconsistent, the neighbors are nervous, and the clues point in several directions at once.
Holmes moves through Porter Mews like a man reading a book only he can see — noting the scuff marks on a door, the angle of a broken lamp, the odd behavior of a tenant who seems far too eager to avoid questions. As Holmes digs deeper, he uncovers a hidden motive and a carefully concealed crime that was meant to stay buried in the shadows of the Mews. "The Porter Mews Mystery" is a tight, clever detective story that showcases Holmes at his analytical best, turning a small domestic incident into a case of surprising depth and danger.
