It’s episode 18 of The Missing Episodes Podcast and it’s The Underwater Menace, in which we see “Dr. W” dabbling with the mythological in this astonishing aquatic adventure. The fifth story of season 4 sees the continuation of the development of Patrick Troughton’s Doctor and a proper introduction for Jamie. We also have Polly being turned into a fish (almost) and Ben wondering what the future holds, now there’s a strapping young(er) man on the team.

But it’s a story that’s often overlooked and almost forgotten, which leaves plenty of scope for insights anew from the assembled shoal of podcasters. Tim Burrows is joined by multimedia producer and DVD range stalwart John Kelly, co-creator of Dalek 63:88, 3D modeller and DWM contributor Gavin Rymill, Missing Episodes Podcast debutant, pianist extraordinaire and creator of “Dudley Simpson is Doctor Who”, Jess Jurkovic, but did they all have a whale of a time with this serial? We also check in with science and astronomy writer Giles Sparrow, to chew over whether the science in the sci-fi works, or does it drive him round the Bends?

Under the sea, under the sea, listener it’s better, down where it’s wetter, take it from me.

So let’s take a deep dive because there's definitely buried treasure, as we look at The Underwater Menace.

And look, I didn’t use that line!

It’s episode 17 of The Missing Episodes Podcast! And it’s the last of the pure historical adventures, until this very day. The fourth story of season 4 also sees a very different portrayal, or series of portrayals, by Patrick Troughton. The Doctor is still very much an unknown quantity and is still acting under the watchful eyes of Ben and Polly, while one James Robert McCrimmon gets introduced to the crew.

The Highlanders takes place in a setting of 18th Century atrocities following the last battle of British soil, Culloden, while The Doctor seems to take a carefree and comedic approach to affairs. So there’s plenty to unpick with this almost entirely missing story.

Tim is joined by Doctor Who historian Rhys Williams, and 3D modeller, artist and co-creator of Dalek 63:88, and now historian Gav Rymill to take a look at this most curious of missing adventures, then it’s off on a world tour to work out whether one day we might get to see any more…

So fire up the bagpipes, pick up your sword and scream “Creag an Tuirc!” as we take a running charge at The Highlanders.

    Special Edition: Film is Fabulous!

Film is Fabulous! is the organisation dedicated to preserving vulnerable film collections across the UK — a mission that resonates deeply with fans of lost television treasures, especially those captivated by the thought of missing Doctor Who episodes.

In this episode, Tim is joined by three key members and trustees of the Film is Fabulous! team: established film collector John Franklin, De Montfort University’s Professor Justin Smith, and Sue Malden, the renowned former Head of Broadcast Archives at the BBC.

Together, they delve into the organisation’s recent progress, their new recognition as a Charitable Trust, and some eyebrow-raising remarks that have sparked fresh speculation — could some long-lost Doctor Who episodes still exist within UK film collections?

The Doctor Who Missing Episodes Podcast is back!

Our next story in the regular series is the last of the pure historicals—making it the perfect time to reflect on the place of the historical adventure in early Doctor Who. To mark the occasion, Tim is joined by historian, broadcaster, and co-host of the acclaimed The Rest Is History podcast, Dominic Sandbrook.

Dominic’s work on post-war Britain often considers how television both shaped and reflected the culture of the time—Doctor Who included. In this special episode, he discusses his love for the show, the historicals, their context, and how they fit into the broader legacy of the show’s formative years.

So pull the caravan into a way station, put the human sacrifice on hold and delay storming the Bastille, because the podcast hiatus is over, literally the rest is history. (Sorry).

It’s episode 16 of The Missing Episodes Podcast! The third story of season 4 introduces Patrick Troughton as a very different Doctor Who, if indeed he is The Doctor. A question which divides the rest of the TARDIS crew, Ben and Polly.

But despite this fundamental change to the show, this story doesn’t sit around navel gazing. We’re quickly immersed in the politics of Vulcan as David Whitaker returns to pen one of the truly great Dalek stories.

Tim is joined not only by Doctor Who historian Rhys Williams, but three new podcast guests: Something Who podcast host Richard Smith and multi-media producer and DVD range veteran John Kelly. Later, co-host of the most excellent 42 to Doomsday podcast, Rob Mammone, drops by to tell us how he helped to recover some of the many clips that exist of this story.

The team delve into the history, production and themes of this six-part classic, then explore how so many clips came back, then it’s off on a world tour to work out whether one day we might get to see any more…

So put on your Earth examiner badge, listen more carefully than Lesterson and avoid the mercury vapours as we take a very deep dive into The Power of the Daleks.
