It’s another special edition of the Doctor Who Missing Episodes Podcast.

This time, Tim is joined by New Zealand missing episode hunter, Neil Lambess. Neil famously found The Lion in 1999 and returned it, alongside Paul Scoones. We interviewed Paul in our third episode and so I was delighted to get the other half of the tale, first hand.

Aside from that magnificent discovery, Neil has many memories of watching now missing episodes on transmission in New Zealand which he was happy to share.

Neil also has a memory of being shown episodes of The Macra Terror, projected at his school in 1974. How did this come about and crucially, what became of those 16mm films? Could they still be lurking in New Zealand, or do Macra really not exist?

It’s a special edition of the Doctor Who Missing Episodes Podcast! Gerry Davis was a key creative force behind Doctor Who in the mid-1960s, helping ensure that the series would continue onwards.

He served as story editor from 1966 to 1967. In that role, he helped steer the show toward a stronger science-fiction focus, emphasizing futuristic concepts and is best known for co-creating the Cybermen alongside Kit Pedler.

He also wrote several serials, some of which helped cement the Cybermen’s popularity, and contributed to developing the show’s format during a period of major transition.

Gerry’s friend Anthony Clark joined Tim to discuss his own association with the show, and also provided a previously unbroadcast interview with Gerry, which you can now hear for the first time, in which he talks about The Highlanders and The Moonbase.

It’s episode 18 of The Missing Episodes Podcast and it’s The Underwater Menace, in which we see “Dr. W” dabbling with the mythological in this astonishing aquatic adventure. The fifth story of season 4 sees the continuation of the development of Patrick Troughton’s Doctor and a proper introduction for Jamie. We also have Polly being turned into a fish (almost) and Ben wondering what the future holds, now there’s a strapping young(er) man on the team.

But it’s a story that’s often overlooked and almost forgotten, which leaves plenty of scope for insights anew from the assembled shoal of podcasters. We also check in with science and astronomy writer Giles Sparrow, to chew over whether the science in the sci-fi works, or does it drive him round the Bends?
