Good evening and welcome to today’s second episode, where we continue with Charlotte Brontë’s Villette. A chapter that mulls the differences been Protestant and Roman Catholic faiths. I imagine Charlotte Brontë sometimes closing her eyes and writing straight from heightened or deepened feelings, where the plot is irrelevant: her pen creates a room or space full of contrasting thoughts, emotions, images and even sights and sounds. Plants are watered, canine ears are silky, we smell Catholic incense and hear the noise from a religious procession: all taking place in the mind and intense memories of Lucy Snowe, with some quiet and wholly unpredictable movements in plot and pace. We finish the chapter thinking what? For me, that in hearing from such an intelligent and perceptive, sensitive woman living in a different world and time, we are privileged and - in my case - my heart swells with gladness at that privilege and fervent admiration for her mind.
I wish you all a peaceful night and look forward to catching up with upi soon. We are edging towards a full moon 🌕🌝

Good evening and thank you so much for joining me tonight. I hope you forgive the hesitations and deviations as I enjoy reading you this wonderful feast. What joy that all this marvellous stuff is out there to read - the trick is to try not to fret that life isn’t long enough!
How are you this fair Monday evening? What country are you from? Are you content? Would you like me to read you or a loved one a poem? Get in touch and let me know. Gretellem@yahoo.com
Tomorrow I’m going to read more from the old account of politics in the early years of Queen Victoria’s reign. Also, is it time to go back to the best of all Abbeys: Sherborne? Perhaps we could look in detail at the stunning misericords? Or we might focus on the oldest of the stained glass?
Very best wishes and thank you, as always, for your kindness, support and company.
We are people trying to walk a gentler and kinder path, ever curious about the worlds and people that came before us, and wanting to look for the beauty in the world, such as in nature and in all ways of the arts.
Love Gretel 🕯️🫖🌝
