Landscape Photography World

Circle of Light is a collaboration between six landscape and nature photographers, Anna Morgan, Charlotte Gibb, Claudia Welsch, Jennifer Renwick, Michele Sons and Sarah Marino, formed to counter the isolation that comes with landscape photography and to push the boundaries of what nature photography can express.

Their first project, the ebook The Nature of Place, brings together lead essays and dialogue style responses that read like a campfire conversation about creativity, connection to place and personal expression. It's the result of 18 months of Zoom calls, peer editing and genuine collaborative effort.

In this episode four of the six members talk about building supportive peer community, encouraging photography as expressive art rather than technique driven documentation, and why elevating diverse voices in the landscape photography world matters to them. They also discuss solitude versus community, finding honest critique networks and their thoughts on AI's growing presence in photography.

Jeffrey Tadlock grew up around cameras, his dad was an advanced amateur with a Nikon film setup, and early years photographing BMX and skateboarding events taught him camera settings before he really knew what he was doing. A decade long gap ended in 2016 when he picked up his wife's old Nikon and the fire came back.

Based in Ohio, Jeffrey has built a life around landscape photography as a creative outlet alongside a headshot business, YouTube channel and the Shutter Nonsense podcast. A sunset on Lake Erie shot on his phone was the moment that shifted his focus from documentary snapshots to images that try to convey how a place actually feels.

In this episode Jeffrey talks about his patient approach to working scenes particularly waterfalls, the value of revisiting locations like Hocking Hills and Death Valley, and why he defines success as enjoying the process rather than chasing great images. His natural, true to scene editing philosophy is refreshing too.

Warren Lloyd got his start with a Praktica SLR and a Mamiya 600mm lens in the late 1970s, learning fast because film cost money and mistakes weren't cheap. A robbery cleared out his gear and photography went quiet for years, until a 2013 road trip through southeast Australia reignited the bug for good.

 

Now retired and based in Bathurst, Warren has found a rich subject in the rolling countryside on his doorstep. Fog, moody light, the Capertee Valley and locations like Oberon Dam give him more than enough to work with close to home, supplemented by occasional architectural shoots in Sydney.

 

In this episode Warren talks about using PhotoPills to plan shoots alongside spontaneous outings, entering competitions with themed series, and using captions to promote conservation including work in an endangered grassy box woodland reserve. He also shares a practical rain tip involving shower caps and the story of a camera destroyed by a wave.

Greg Cromie first fell in love with photography at school, then stepped away while life took over. It was his wife's sudden death in 2013 that brought him back, using the camera as therapy and a way to re-engage mindfully with the world around him.

 

Based in Melbourne, Greg's focus is street and travel photography, roaming the city's laneways and making an annual trip to Japan to document a culture he's genuinely fascinated by. His involvement with the Australian Fujifilm community, regular blogging and paid writing for outlets like Shotkit and Lucky Straps keep his thinking sharp and his motivation strong through Melbourne winters and the harder days.

 

In this episode Greg talks about the ethics and safety of street photography, his minimal editing approach using Fujifilm film simulations, involvement with the Bright Festival of Photography, and how writing and shooting consistently fuel each other. He's also thoughtful about what authentic human experience means in an era of AI generated imagery.

Anna Morgan came to landscape photography via veterinary science, her own practice, and a Master's degree in Conservation Medicine from the University of Edinburgh. That research brought photography and conservation together in ways that still shape everything she does.

Now based on Vancouver Island after moving from the UK, Anna gravitates toward quiet, intimate scenes and abstract interpretations of the natural world rather than grand vistas or wildlife subjects. She chose landscapes partly to avoid disturbing animals, and partly because solitude in nature is central to her practice and her wellbeing.

In this episode Anna talks about Indigenous stewardship and why she avoids sharing precise locations, her preference for intuitive and serendipitous shooting over heavy planning, and how she defines success as opening people's hearts rather than building a large audience. She also discusses running workshops focused on authenticity, creativity and ecological connection, and the thinking behind her master's thesis on photographers' roles in conservation.
