Andy Ritchie joins Frank McAvennie and Simon Houston for a fascinating and emotional look back on one of Scottish football’s great “what if?” stories.
Once considered one of the brightest talents in the country, Andy reflects on becoming Scottish Player of the Year while playing part-time for Morton, even fixing roads the very day he collected the award.
He tells the incredible story of finishing second only to Paolo Rossi in Europe’s Golden Boot standings, yet feeling overlooked because he played outside the spotlight.
There are brilliant stories throughout, from his complicated relationship with Jock Stein, who released him before later trying to bring him back, to addressing claims he was lazy and nicknamed “The Idle Idol”.
Andy also opens up about missing out on the World Cup through Scotland’s old committee selection system, leaving football before the age of 28, his mental health struggles, and later returning to Celtic as chief scout, where he played a key role in bringing Paul Lambert to the club from European champions Borussia Dortmund.
Funny, honest and packed with incredible football stories, this is a remarkable episode.
