We’re back with your latest dose of 90s movie nostalgia, and rewatching 1998’s gross-out rom com blockbuster, There’s Something About Mary, starring Ben Stiller and Cameron Diaz. Reel in your fishing line and stock up on hair gel, we’re heading on over to 90s Miami.

Molly and Chloe take a road trip down memory lane, reviewing the film’s outrageous comic shocks, particularly the famous opening sequence and that notorious hair do scene. We also reflect on the film’s representation of disabled people and gay men, and consider how influential the Farrelly brothers’ humour is on modern social media. And we ask: will Matt Dillon’s moustache ever be acceptable?

Plus we make a rest stop at our usual features of most 90s moments and awards, and pull up at our imaginary drive-in cinema for some recommendations of further absurdist comedies and offbeat romances.

We’re saying happy 250th birthday to America this July 4th by rewatching Roland Emmerich’s 1996 alien invasion disaster movie, Independence Day. Evacuate the White House, fire up the jets, and grab your Apple PowerBook 5300, we’re going to take this mothership down.

Molly and Chloe venture into the exclusion zone and scope out the multiple plotlines starring Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman as they defend the world from extraterrestrial attack. We discuss why Emmerich stuck to his guns in casting Smith, what makes the visual effects hold up (for the most part) and whether modern blockbusters are as good as the classics.

Plus we give the movie’s best moments some military honours, target its most 90s details, and make some recommendations for exceptional extraterrestrial movies and disaster flicks.

For Pride month we’re looking back at a key, tragic moment in LGBT+ history, the AIDS crisis, and watching Jonathan Demme’s Oscar-winning legal drama, Philadelphia.

Molly and Chloe welcome actor, writer and audio producer, Steph MacGaraidh to run riot grrrl through this Shakespeare-inspired high school rom com. We discuss the casting of relative unknowns Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger, the 90s soundtrack, and how the screenwriters Karen McCullah and Kirsten Smith infuse the script with Shakespearean wit, romance and visual gags, while dialling up the feminist empowerment.

Bond is bungee jumping onto our screens as we rewatch 1995’s GOLDENEYE, the first of the series with Pearce Brosnan as the gadget-loving superspy and all-round ladies’ man. Arm your T-55 tank and reload your Walther PPK, we’re on a new mission.

Molly and Chloe are shaken and stirred by the fabulous casting of Brosnan, Sean Bean, Judi Dench, Alan Cumming and Izabella Scorupco, though we have a particular love for Famke Janssen’s outrageously camp performance as baddy Bond girl, Xenia Onatopp. You could say she’s Xenia Overthetop. We talk post-Cold War politics, innuendo, action scenes, 90s CGI, Tina Turner, and whether Dench’s M is right that Bond is a ‘sexist, misogynist dinosaur’.
