Father Matthew tells us how it began: a closed church, a couple looking for a new spiritual home, a letter to the family at the Manor House, and a year-long experiment that is growing into a thriving Ordinariate congregation. Today St Mary's Catholic church has two Sunday Masses, many parish activities, and a 99-year lease on the church building. Five members of the parish community join the conversation to explain how their faith is nurtured by the way our shared faith is expressed in this particular parish.

Graham describes how times of serious mental illness and a loss of his sense of self nevertheless helped him to discover his spiritual part that ‘I had been ignoring.’ After much questioning, he found a home in the Catholic Church. Graham shares what it means to be made in the image and likeness of God when mental health is fragile, the overlap he sees between mystical experience and psychiatric episodes, the writings of St John of the Cross, and the ‘excuses and distractions’ that sometimes keep him from prayer.

Ali shares her unflinching account of life in addiction, rooted she says in 'an original lie in your soul'. In her most terrible darkness, her guardian angel intervened. Now with the help of a 'holy' 12-step fellowship, Ali explains that she is able to see that she was always loved by God and He is working in her life. She describes taking responsibility for her choices, making amends where she can and living truthfully in the light: 'There's no hiding because God is truth.' 
(Note that we speak about the difficult themes of drug addiction, suicide and abortion in this conversation.)

Paul explains how he came to be first a Catholic, then an altar server, and now Honorary Lay President of the Guild of St Stephen. He shares a feeling of 'being called to serve God in this way' and the gospel text, 'You did not choose me, I chose you,' speaks to him particularly. Based on Paul's early experience of going into a church for the first time 'out of sheer curiosity,' he challenges us to 'unlock our churches' so that others might do the same today.

Christopher shares how he decided to become a Christian and then a Catholic as a teenager. He is a published poet and explains how his work is inspired by his faith and by the beautiful North Devon countryside. We talk about the ‘awkward’ experience of belonging to a thinly-spread Catholic community in a rural area where the opportunity for daily Mass is absent. But, in tune with the season of Eastertide, Christopher says that in his poetry he intends to ‘always give a sense that we're not beyond hope. I do not despair.’  To illustrate this, he goes on to read one of his beautiful sonnets, ‘Earth in Easter.’
