Ep.103 / FREDDIE POWELL / DIRECTOR
Ep.103 / FREDDIE POWELL / DIRECTOR
With a wealth of experience, after 15 years at Wieden + Kennedy's, Freddie Powell epitomises the drive and passion it takes to be successful in the creative industry.
His path to directing, I think, gives him a unique perspective to the role of director, especially in short form, and he has honed his pitch process to maximise the hit rate between pitching and winning the job.
From a family farm surrounded by creativity, to the Creative big smoke of Ad Land and all the way back round to his own family farm where he runs his own production company, DROOL, he is a man that knows what he wants, what he needs to achieve it and commits to making it happen.

Ep.102 - Elian Beaumont - The Graddies Winner 2024
Ep 102. The Graddies 2024 Winner - Elian Beaumont
Being asked to be a judge at this year The Graddies Film Festival was a real honour.
Watching so many great films of the next generation gave me a lovely hope that we have some amazing talent coming through.
Elian Beaumont was the winner of this year's festival and this chat with him will ignite a fire in the bellies of the generation behind him and reignite it in those years ahead. Check out his socials below.
His passion for the craft is evident, so now it's about the exciting journey ahead, as he paves his way. If this episode, and you, the listeners, are the reason he makes another step up, then this podcast will have done exactly what I wanted it to do - to document our generation and help the generations to come!
As the custodians of the industry and the torch bearers of our job titles, its is down to all of us to make the best decisions, not for us, but for 7 generations in the future.
“A society grows great when old men plant trees in whose shade they shall never sit”
Big love

EP.101 | DENNIS FRASER MBE | KEY GRIP
EP.101 | DENNIS FRASER MBE | KEY GRIP
Recorded in Oct 2020 I got the opportunity to talk to Dennis at his office Chapman UK. I stopped off and bought some microphones on the way, as I had been doing it all through Zoom to that point, and we sat and we had a chat.
A broken laptop later, I had thought I had lost this ep forever until this week when an old hard drive popped up and gave me this gift.
I loved this chat as the memories of the industry that gave Dennis a career to excel in can be heard in each story.
100 plus films, creator of the UK NVQ for Grips, mastermind of a large percentage of modern grip equipment - oh and an MBE for good measure. Dennis shows us what a full life in film can look like.
Enjoy

EP100. Jim Dowdall. Stunt Coordinator.
EP100. Jim Dowdall. Stunt Coordinator.
When we started this podcast in 2019, the idea was to give film students a direct line to members of film crew who are further ahead in their chosen careers; hearing their stories and learning from their experiences. When the world stopped in 2020, the ‘experienced’ in the film industry had time to chat.
This episode was recorded in May 2020 and we knew it was destined to be our 100th episode.
Jim’s story and his entry into, exit from, and return to the film industry demonstrate that there really is no ‘one true path’ to becoming a crew member. Encouraged to leave school, running off to join the circus, a stint in the parachute regiment, working as an armourer – all unexpected experiences that conspired together to give Jim the tools for success: a thirst to learn, the ability to move forward and accepting every opportunity that came his way.
In the words of Steve Jobs, “it’s only looking back that we can connect the dots”. And, connect the dots we do, with Jim’s amazing stories and anecdotes about film super stars who paved the way for generations they would never meet.
Thank you Film Family for giving this an audience.
We truly love what we do and we thank you for giving us your precious time each episode.
