- What if some of the drugs being investigated for their potential to help fight cancer have been sitting in our medicine cabinets for decades?
In this episode, Julia sits down with Dr Hariharan Kuhan, a doctor trained in oncology at Imperial College London and the Royal Marsden, to explore a controversial and emerging area of cancer research: repurposed medicines.
They discuss...Metformin, a common diabetes drug, to statins, aspirin and even ivermectin, Dr Kuhan explains why researchers are investigating everyday medications for their potential role in cancer care, and why some of these inexpensive, off-patent drugs struggle to attract funding for large-scale clinical trials.
But could these treatments really make a difference? And what does the science actually tell us?
Following viral claims about ivermectin and cancer, Dr Kuhan also shares a stark warning about the dangers of self-medicating.
