正文：OFFICIALLY IT IS a city. But Hanchuan, in central China, is largely rural. Many of its 1m people live between fields and small factories. A company making sewing thread and a handful of fisheries make up a good chunk of its economy. But there was a buzz in the tiny city centre in January, when Hanchuan’s first McDonald’s opened its doors. When The Economist visited on a snowy afternoon soon after, the fastfood restaurant was packed.

正文：ONAPRIL 17TH Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s foreign minister, declared that commercial passage through the Strait of Hormuz was “completely open”.Shortly afterwards Donald Trump, America’s president, echoed his words: the conduit was “completely open and ready for business”. Oil traders pushed futures prices for Brent down by more than 10%, to $89 a barrel, their lowest since March 10th. The spot price at the Dutch Title Transfer Facility fell below € 40($47) per megawatt-hour for the first time since the conflict began.

正文：William Liu is grateful that he finished high school when he did. If the latest AI tools had been around then, he told me, he might have been tempted to use them to do his homework. Liu, now a sophomore at Stanford, finished high school all the way back in 2024.“I have a younger sibling who is just graduating high school,” he said. “Our educational experience has been vastly different, even though we’re just two years apart.”

正文：The Dong Fang Hong 3 is the world's largest "silent" research ship, supposedly able to glide through water without disturbing fish swimming just 20 m below it. Equipped with laboratories and the ability to lay sensors, the 103 m vessel owned and operated by the Ocean University of China has spent the past two years mapping the ocean floor. But,according to a recent Reuters analysis, the vessel is collecting subterranean data that could confer a military advantage in the event of underwater warfare. Charting the subsea terrain could identify possible hiding places for submarines, as well as unmask underwater vessels operated by adversaries.
