正文：WHEN PROTESTERS took to the bazaars and streets of Iran, the supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, met them with bullets. After two weeks of chants of “death to the dictator”, militiamen allied with the Revolutionary Guards and toting automatic rifles rode in on swarms of motorbikes. With snipers, they shot their fellow citizens, aiming at their faces and genitals. Morgues are overflowing. Bodies in bags are stacked on bloodied pavements. Several thousand may be dead. Thousands of the wounded have been arrested, some dragged from hospital beds to prison cells and an uncertain fate.

正文：An app called “Are You Dead?” that checks up on people living alone has become the most popular paid Apple Store download in China, a sign of concerns created by the country’s rapidly changing demographics. The app, called Sile Me in Chinese, requires users to “check in” by pressing a button. If they fail to do so over two consecutive days, the app sends a message to an emergency contact nominated by the user.

正文：To hear T tell it, the end of the Islamic Republic is nigh. “Iran is looking at FREEDOM, perhaps like never before,” he announced on social media on January 10th. “The USA stands ready to help!” The American president has made similar pronouncements every few days since a wave of protest began sweeping Iran on December 28th. He warned that America is “locked and loaded and ready” to intervene if the regime kills demonstrators. “If they do that, they’re going to have to pay hell,” he said.
