Cycling Family Trees Episode 2 - Rabobank

    01/07/2026 | 27 mins.
In this episode of Cycling Family Trees, we trace the remarkable Rabobank lineage: from Jan Raas’s post–TI-Raleigh breakaway and the Kwantum roots of the 1980s, through Rabobank’s rise as the great Dutch talent factory, to its collapse amid cycling’s doping reckoning and its rebirth as the powerhouse now known as Team Visma | Lease a Bike.

Along the way, we follow the men’s and women’s branches of the story — from Michael Boogerd, Erik Dekker, Óscar Freire and Denis Menchov to Marianne Vos, Anna van der Breggen, Annemiek van Vleuten, Pauline Ferrand-Prévot, Primož Roglič, Wout van Aert and Jonas Vingegaard — and ask how one of cycling’s most complicated family trees became one of its most successful.

Birth(day)s, deaths and marriages! Welcome to the evening edition of your local newspaper. Thankfully cycling content is a-plenty as Chris, David and Gary cast their eyes over another fascinating few weeks in pro cycling.

📸 The Dauphiné Libéré (okay, the Tour Auvergne - Rhône-Alpes, if you must) is often seen as a Tour de France indicator, yet in 78 editions only 12 Dauphiné winners have taken the Maillot Jaune in July. The first was Louison Bobet, pictured embracing first wife Christiane after the 1955 finish in Grenoble. Already a two-time Tour winner, Bobet later earned praise from race founder Georges Cazeneuve for “haloing the race with prestige”. (Photo: Dauphine Libéré)

Cycling Family Trees Episode 1 - Peugeot

    01/06/2026 | 29 mins.
Every cycling team has a story. In this series, we’ll dig into the teams that made cycling what it is: the dynasties, the cult squads, the superteams, the survivors, and the vanished names that still echo through the peloton today. We’ll look at where they came from, who built them, what they won, what they changed — and what grew from them after the final finish line

In this first episode, Gary Fairley explores the extraordinary history of the Peugeot cycling team - one of the most influential and successful teams the sport has ever known. From the earliest Tours de France to the modern peloton, Peugeot helped shape professional cycling through legendary riders including Eddy Merckx, Tom Simpson and Bernard Thévenet. Gary follows the team’s evolution through the Roger Legeay years, from Z and GAN to Crédit Agricole, tracing a remarkable lineage that lasted more than a century.

A story of innovation, champions, iconic jerseys and lasting legacy - this is the family tree of Peugeot.

When is a race not a race? When the GC lead decides he doesn’t fancy it? Gary’s apathy towards the current Maglia Rosa might be taking a turn for the worse, but how does the sport balance spectacle and safety? Still, over the Mediterranean in Burgos, the Women’s World Tour continues to serve up Actual Racing and new winners and it all bodes well for the Giro d’Italia Women which rolls out next weekend. The team look ahead to this, a sprinter-unfriendly final week of the men’s Giro and also take delight in the SRAM v UCI legal case being settled in favour of the kids rather than the man.

📸 The greatest winning margin in Giro d'Italia history occurred in the 1914 edition, when Italian Alfonso Calzolari (pictured) defeated his compatriot Pierino Albini by 1 hour, 55 minutes, and 26 seconds. Of course, given that the average length of each of that edition’s 8 stages was almost 400km, then perhaps such a time gap is surprising but not shocking. Tadej Pogacar’s 9:56 margin over Dani Martinez in 2024 remains the greatest margin in more recent times, although that is still closer than Vittorio Adorni’s 11:26 over Italo Zilioli in 1965 or the 1954 battle between Swiss riders Hugo Koblet and Carlo Clerici which saw Koblet trail home over 24 minutes behind his victorious compatriot .
