Empathetic Equestrians Series
It's been a minute! We are taking our podcast in a new direction for our new series - Empathetic Equestrians!
As we stumble upon fellow equestrians working with their horses in an ethical and empathetic way, we work to bring that style of horsemanship and equestrianism to light. Via our Empathetic Equestrians series, we interview those equestrians and outline their beliefs, practices, and reasoning for their ethical and empathetic behavior.
We hope that these stories will provide a platform for more equestrians to begin to practice with empathy, as well as highlight those that already do.

Session Analysis: Horse Trainer or Chameleon?
This is our first session analysis! Join us as we discuss a session we worked through with a horse the other day, what principles I drew on for the decisions I made, as well as why I did or did NOT do something! We break this down using my favorite metaphor - the color metaphor. Listen along and learn something new!

Positive Reinforcement vs Negative Reinforcement: Which do horses prefer?
Join us as we discuss one of the most debated topics in equine behavior today - Positive Reinforcement vs Negative Reinforcement: Which do horses prefer?
In this episode we review articles covering training using some of these methods as well as the differences (& implications) of rule governed behavior and contingency shaped behavior (update - horses can only do one of those!). We also discuss how extinction bursts could look different for positively reinforced behaviors compared to negatively reinforced behaviors. We wrap up with a reminder that these consequences are not mutually exclusive and that when used correctly there is nothing wrong with either of them!
